***This is a Texas Government Class*** 2 separate papers one Democrat point of view (3pages), the other a Republican point of view (3 pages).
Prepare one paper for each of your two selected topics: you will write two papers total. Each paper should be approximately 3 pages in length, double spaced, and should properly cite all resources in any established and accepted format (ALA, MLA, Chicago, etc).
One paper must be presented from a democrat / freedom-to perspective, and the other paper must be presented from a republican / freedom-from perspective. The spirit of this assignment is to force you to develop positive and negative arguments for both parties so you can further develop your own partisan views. You will turn in one paper that supports the democrat party and views on an issue, and another paper that supports the republican party and views on a different issue. If you are doing this assignment correctly, you will ultimately be taking very different positions in your two papers.
Part 1: about ½ page – 1 page: Explain the basic party dynamics of both parties. You should rely on our class materials for this, and you should frame this section by using the language of “freedom-from/to” and “equality under law/of opportunity / of condition.”
Part 1 can be (should be) copied from paper 1 to paper 2 (this section can be identical in both papers).
Part 2: about ½ page – 1 page: Provide a basic summary of your topic, including: a) the basic history of this topic that leads up to today (how has this issue been handled in the past, what meaningful changes have occurred, and when and why did they occur, what political actors are involved in the process) and b) the basic proposals or views from Texas democrats and Texas republicans respectively.
Parts 1 and 2 should be prepared from a non-partisan perspective. Present objective, factual material in these sections.
Part 3: about 1 page – 1 ½ pages: Engage in a partisan debate in this section. Address both of the following areas:
Why is your party’s idea correct? Why is it proper for the state to perform this action (do they have power in our system to act in this area?) Why will it help? Who will it help? Why can we afford it? Tie your arguments to lessons from class wherever possible.
Why is the other party’s idea poor? Why is it improper for the state to perform this action (do they have power in our system to act in this area?) Why will it cause harm? Who will it harm? Why can the state not afford to pay for it? Tie your arguments to lessons from class wherever possible.
