After listening to the songs “What It’s Like” by Everlast and “Where is the Love” by Black Eyed Peas, choose two of the topics and two of the themes presented in each work. Remember that topics and themes are different. Once you decide on a theme, give two examples (quotes) from each work that support the theme.
Topics: Topics are typically one or two words and reflect the overall subjects in a work. Examples: love, marriage, power, family, sexuality, gender, etc. etc.
Themes: Refers to the conveyed or implied message of the work. In other words, what is the work saying about the topic? Example: A topic presented in “The Story of An Hour” by Kate Chopin is marriage. One theme presented in “The Story of An hour” is how the institution of marriage can be oppressive towards women.
Here’s an example of how to do this assignment:
The work: “Girl” by Jamaica Kincaid
Topic: Sexual reputation
Theme: Sexual reputation is important to women’s identity and ability to succeed in society.
Two examples from “Girl.”
“This is how to hem a dress when you see the hem coming down and so to prevent yourself from looking like the slut I know you are so bent on becoming;”
“This is how to behave in the presence of men who don’t know you very well, and this way they won’t recognize immediately the slut I have warned you against becoming;”
No need to write in paragraph form for this assignment. You can follow the example above.
